News : World champions Italy go through

World champions Italy beat 10-man France 2-0 to secure their place in a Euro 2008 quarter-final against Spain.

France had to beat their arch rivals in their last Group C match to stand a chance of reaching the final eight.

But the match got off to a bad start when their key player Franck Ribery was carried off on a stretcher with a knee injury after less than 10 minutes.

France defender Eric Abidal was then given a red card for bringing down Luca Toni, leaving the side with just 10 men to battle it out.

Joanna Partridge reports.
