News : Empire State Building to get green

The iconic Empire State Building, a model of American progress when it was built in 1931, becomes a model again -- this time of green technology and sustainability.

The Empire State Building will undergo a USD$500 million retrofit aimed at significantly reducing its energy consumption, a newly unveiled plan announced amid the worst economic slump since the decade in which it was built.

The 101-storey building's windows will be replaced by 6,500 refurbished insulated windows to dramatically decrease energy costs.

Inside, the building will be fitted with the latest in green technology, from better insulation to more efficient lighting and air-control systems. The retrofit project was spearheaded by former President Bill Clinton's Climate Initiative Group.

Project leaders say the retrofit will save the Empire State building USD$4.4 million annually and radically reduce its carbon footprint.

Work is underway and the project is slated for completion in 2013.
